Golf is still, of course, a sport. There is still the handicap, the competition, the obsession with shaving off one more stroke, the drive we want to hit ten metres farther and that two-metre putt we still remember weeks later.

But something new has emerged around those 18 holes. Players are no longer looking only for a good course. They are looking for a place worth visiting.

They want to play, but they also want to enjoy the scenery. They want to eat well after the round. They want to switch off. They expect well-maintained facilities, technology that makes the experience easier and, increasingly, the possibility of combining golf with other activities.

In short, golf is no longer selling only 18 holes. It is beginning to sell an experience.

A new type of player

The person playing the game is changing too.

European golf has experienced significant growth in recent years. According to data from the European Golf Association, the number of registered golfers in Europe exceeded 4.9 million in 2025, while the number of people who participated in some form of golf reached 40.5 million.

These figures suggest that golf is reaching people who may not identify with the traditional image of a golfer.

The new player might be an executive looking to disconnect for a weekend. A couple combining golf and gastronomy. A group of friends organising a trip around several courses. A younger player discovering the sport through social media. Or someone who starts playing simply because they realise golf fits their way of enjoying their free time.

And many of them share one thing in common: they do not want to feel as though they are entering only a sports club.

The course is still the most important thing

This does not mean that the course has become less important. Quite the opposite. Perhaps having a great course has never mattered more. But the definition of a “great course” has also expanded.

A great course is not simply one that presents difficulties. It is one with personality. One that makes you think. One that offers variety. One with holes you remember. One that changes with the light, the season or the conditions of the day.

Today’s player may appreciate good course design just as much as the quality of the greens, but they also immediately notice how the course fits into its surroundings.

Playing among mountains is not the same as playing by the sea. Playing surrounded by forest is not the same as playing in an open landscape. And playing at more than a thousand metres above sea level, with the Cerdanya valley and the Cadí mountain range as a backdrop, creates a feeling that is difficult to reproduce anywhere else.

At Fontanals Golf, for example, the landscape is not simply decoration. It is part of the experience.

There are holes where the strategy demands complete concentration on the shot, and other moments when, after hitting the ball, it is almost impossible not to look up and take in the surroundings.

It is one of golf’s most beautiful contradictions: the player wants to play well, but also wants to enjoy the place where they are playing.

Technology has also changed expectations

The modern golf experience cannot be understood without technology either.

GPS systems, mobile apps, booking platforms, swing analysis, launch monitors, club fitting and performance-tracking tools are already part of everyday life for many players.

Technology has achieved something interesting: it has made a deeply traditional activity increasingly digital.

But its role should not be to replace the experience. It should make it simpler.

Booking a tee time without having to make a phone call. Checking course conditions. Knowing distances. Analysing a round. Receiving tournament information. Finding a restaurant or an activity after playing.

The best technology applied to golf is probably the technology that disappears — the kind that makes everything easier without becoming the centre of attention.

Competition is changing too

Competition will, of course, remain an essential part of golf. But even here, the experience surrounding a tournament is becoming increasingly important.

Major professional events have demonstrated this for decades. Spectators do not attend simply to watch golf shots. They go to experience an event.

And clubs are gradually bringing that same philosophy into their own competitions.

A tournament can include gastronomy, music, brands, activities, experiences for companions, digital content, gifts, photography and staging that can turn an ordinary round into something memorable.

At Fontanals, hosting professional competitions such as the Challenge de España, the Challenge de Catalunya and the arrival of the European Legends Cup has shown just how much a golf course can become, for a few days, something far greater than a place where golf is played.

It becomes a stage.

A meeting point.

A showcase for an entire region.

And also an experience for those who have the opportunity to live it from the inside.

The 18 holes are only the beginning

Golf is not becoming less about golf. It is becoming broader.

Players will still care about their handicap. They will still get frustrated after hitting an iron into the water. They will still celebrate a birdie. They will still talk about clubs, balls and swings after the round is over.

But perhaps now they expect something more.

And above all, somewhere that allows them to forget, for a few hours, everything happening outside.

That is probably the new golf. One in which the 18 holes remain at the heart of the experience, but are no longer the entire experience.

Because perhaps the future of golf is not about getting us to play more. Perhaps it is about making us want to stay a little longer every time we play.

In places such as the Cerdanya, where landscape, mountains and golf coexist so naturally, this new way of understanding the sport still has a great deal of potential ahead.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

[vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” row_position_desktop=”default” row_position_tablet=”inherit” row_position_phone=”inherit” overflow=”visible” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” flex_gap_desktop=”10px” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default”…

[43,27

post-10250","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-golf
